CALL FOR ABSTRACTS AND REGISTRATION

You are cordially invited to DutchBiophysics 2015, the annual Dutch Meeting on Molecular and Cellular Biophysics, to be held on 28 and 29 September at the NH Koningshof in Veldhoven.

The meeting is a joint event with the Annual Meeting of the Netherlands Society for Microscopy (NVvM, http://www.microscopie.nl) and the Biannual Meeting of the Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Technology (http://www.biopm.nl).

Confirmed invited speakers

Keynote speaker:
- William E. Moerner (Stanford University)

International:
- Takanari Inoue (Johns Hopkins Medicine)
- Sjors Scheres (Cambridge)
- Martin Zanni (University of Wisconsin-Madison)
- Roy Bar-Ziv (Weizmann Institute of Science)

National:
- Stan Brouns (Wageningen UR)
- Doris Heinrich (Leiden University)
- Ilja Voets (Eindhoven University of Technology)

Goal and scope
The goal of the meeting is to assemble all groups that work on molecular and cellular biophysics, microscopy and biomedical engineering in the Netherlands. The meeting consists of plenary sessions, with invited presentations by (inter)national speakers, and special oral and poster sessions.

Topics include the biophysics of living cells and their membranes, the cytoskeleton, molecular motors, DNA- and RNA-protein interactions, theoretical biophysics, systems biology and networks, photosynthesis, and new developments in light and electron microscopy, imaging and spectroscopy, force probes, (bio)chemical synthesis, nanotechnology and biomedical applications and biomedical engineering. We welcome contributions from researchers studying these topics from an experimental, theoretical or modelling background.

Organisation
The Dutch Meeting on Molecular and Cellular Biophysics is organised and sponsored by FOM (www.fom.nl) and NWO Earth and Life Sciences (http://www.nwo.nl/ALW), in co-operation with the Netherlands Society for Microscopy (http://www.microscopie.nl) and the Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Technology (http://www.biopm.nl).

Abstract submission and selection
Participants can submit an abstract for an oral or a poster presentation. The deadlines for the submission of abstracts are:
- for an oral presentation: 1 June 2015
- for a poster presentation: 28 August 2015, 12.00 hrs

Please note that submission of an abstract does NOT imply registration for the conference!

Because of the limited number of time slots for oral presentations, the Programme Committee will make a selection from the abstracts submitted for oral presentation.
The result of the selection will be notified to the authors by the end of July. Abstracts submitted but not selected for oral presentation will be transferred as a poster presentation.

You can submit an abstract via this link:
http://www.fom.nl/live/agenda/biophysics/general-information.pag

Poster Prize
The Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Technology will sponsor a poster prize for the three best posters, to be selected during the meeting.

Registration
The registration deadline is 28 August 2014, 12:00 hrs

Participation, including hotel accommodation from 28 to 29 September 2014, is free of charge. However, if you fail to show up and you do not cancel your reservation in advance by contacting the conference organisers, you will be charged for the costs (up to € 200 for two-day participation, staying in a single room).

Please note that submission of an abstract does NOT imply registration for the conference!

Springer IFMBE links

As a member of the IFMBE you are entitled to free access to a number of IFMBE journals that are published via Springer. There are a couple of ways to access these journals. On would be to provide every VvB-BMT member with an individual token. We have chosen to not do that and for now use access via the EAMBES site. That may change in the future. When you go to that page, you will be asked for a username and password. These were send to you via a newsletter or a mail by the society. If you did nor receive them, ask the secretary for a new pair.

National

Our society, the VvB&BMT (in English: "The Netherlands' Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering") has links to many other groups and societies.

To start with there are really close ties to the Nederlandse Natuurkundige Vereniging (www.nnv.nl). There are for instance membership reduction for persons that are member of both societies. There is also one member of the board of our society (at the moment Tim Markus) member of the editorial board of Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Natuurkunde (www.ntvn.nl), the journal of the NNV. Members of our society can publish papers in that journal also, and are invited to do so, to enhance the visibility of biophysics within the physics community.
Links to other Dutch societies like the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Klinische Fysica (www.nvkf.nl) and the Koninklijk Instituut Van Ingenieurs (www.kiviniria.nl) do exist but are less close at the moment.

Various members of our society are also member of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen (www.knaw.nl).

Europe

The society itself is a member of various transnational organizations. Within Europe these are the European Biophysical Societies' Association (www.ebsa.org) and the European Alliance of Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (www.eambes.org). These organizations play among other things a role in promoting the work of our members at the level of the European Community. Members of our society do play a role in the boards of these European associations/alliances.

Worldwide

We are also a member of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (www.ifmbe.org) the federation of national societies for biomedical engineering all over the world (to make it slightly more complicated, EAMBES is a member of the IFMBE too).

Together with the International Organization for Medical Physics (www.iomp.org, the NVKF is a member of IOMP) the IFMBE organizes a world congress every three years (2009 was in Munich, 2012 will be in Beijing (www.wc2012.org) and 2015 in Toronto). There are also regional congresses that are organized with support from the IFMBE. For Europe these are the Northern Baltic, the Medicon, and the EMBEC (look at the conference announcements under the conference tab or at the IFMBE website for more information)

The IFMBE and the IOMP also are the two members of the International Union for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine (www.iupesm.org) an umbrella that has as it's major role that it is this union that is a member of the International Council for Science (www.icsu.org). The ICSU is the toplevel union of all worldwide unions of scientific societies.

The IFMBE is an NGO with the World Health Organization (www.who.org).  IOMP will probably get that status soon.

Many members of the VvB-BMT are also member of the IEEE EMBS (www.embs.org). That was original a US organization for engineers but is nowadays a world wide organization.

Access to Journals

Because we are a member of EBSA and IFMBE, all members have free access to the journals of these organizations, the European Biophysics Journal and the Medical and Biological Engineering & Computing and also some some other publications.
